Boat from Siem Reap to Battambang and visa versa the boat departs at 7am. Tickets are $20. This trip is taken by many as it is picturesque - but can take many hours. The official time is 6 – 7 hours which it is more likely to be during the wet season when the river is higher – and as long as the boat doesn’t have any mechanical problems - which sometimes happens.
However - during the dry season when the river is low and sand banks have to be navigated – the journey will take longer – maybe 2 or 3 hours longer.
The boat will stop for lunch at a half way point for about 30 minutes. Many travellers like to sit on top of the boat for better views and it’s less stuffy than being sat inside for this long journey ( wear a hat and sun cream ).
From Siem Reap the boat crosses the Tonle Sap Lake and then enters the Sangke River travelling upstream to Battambang.
When arriving at Battambang ‘Port of Boats’ ( see Battambang City Map for location ) you will be greeted by a crowd of eager moto-dop’s ready to take you to your Hotel/Guesthouse.

If you rent a motorbike in Phnom Penh ( many rental shops ) the journey to Battambang on route 5 is 294 kilometres – road condition is very good. Foreigners are not allowed to rent motorbikes in Siem Reap – but are allowed to ride them if already rented from elsewhere. This rental ban is apparently to reduce the number of accidents by inexperienced riders.
It is worth noting that Cambodian traffic is almost certainly like none you’ve seen before. If you are riding a motorbike or driving a car – expect the unexpected !
Allow plenty of space in front and make sure you have mirrors. It is now illegal to ride without a crash helmet.

Battambang Airport has not been operating domestic flights for about 10 years. But if you have a fat wallet there are two helicopter companies – Helistar and HNZ.
